Question: How many dogs do you watch
at one time?
Answer: Martin's Dog Farm provides specialized care. We pride ourselves
on having fewer dogs, allowing for more attention per dog. We
are not a boarding kennel! During our busy months we have
a maximum of 14 guests on the farm at one time.
Question: What are the requirements for
free-roam care?
Answer: 1. Current Rabies & DHLPP Shots
2. Current Bordetella (kennel cough)
3. Annual Fecal Test for Parasites
4. Good bill of health from your Veterinarian
5. Topical Flea & Tick Prevention (Frontline, K9 Advantix, Bio
Spot, etc.)
6. Not aggressive in the company of people
7. Not aggressive in the company of dogs
8. Physically healthy and excited to run & play
9. No history of jumping or climbing tall fences
10. No substantial (more than a few episodes) diarrhea within 2
weeks of your dog's stay on the farm
Question: Where do the dogs sleep at
night?
Answer: When the farm first opened we allowed most all of the dogs
to pick a place in our home to sleep, unless they were normally
crated at home. As the farm guests continued to grow, problems began
to arise in the wee hours of the night. Inevitably, one or two dogs
would get up wanting to play and before we knew it the entire house
was in "play mode". IMAGINE THAT!! Better us than you,
huh?!? We also found that some dogs really wanted their own private
place to sleep and became upset when other dogs investigated their
sleeping quarters. As a result, we are now targeting those canines
who are accustomed to being crated. All dogs are now crated at night,
with comfortable bedding when appropriate. We have found this change
to be a very positive one! Each night between 10:00-10:30 p.m. all
guest dogs are tucked in after they have had a final potty time
outside. Wake up time is 6:00-6:30 a.m. daily. Fortunately, the
dogs are so tired from the daily exercise they sleep very well and
any temptation to play is redirected. If your dog isn't usually
crated during the day and hates to be crated, we suggest the possibility
of having a mobile pet service visit your home while you are away.
Question: Where do the dogs eat? Do
they get treats?
Answer: All of the dogs visiting the farm are separated during meal
time.
Meal time is when dogs should have their own space and
ample time to eat. Those dogs who are crated regularly will be fed
in a crate, if they are comfortable. Otherwise, our staff takes
dogs one by one into a private room to eat. We follow the same procedures
for any treats or requested raw hides & Frosty PawsTM.
Question: What do the dogs eat?
Answer: We ask that all visiting dogs come with enough food for
the duration of their visit, plus one extra day. (If your dog is
staying for 4 days, pack 5 days worth of food). You are welcome
to send your dog's favorite treat also, although farm treats are
complimentary. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS TO YOUR DOGS DIET
WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF HIS/HER VISIT ON THE FARM.
Question: Do you provide shuttle services
to and from the farm?
Answer: Yes! The rates vary from $25 - $30 each way. Call for an
exact quote.
Question: What if my dog doesn't get
along with another dog?
Answer: Usually our screening process and the answers you provide
in our initial questionnaire will help prevent that from happening.
In rare cases there are dogs who just don't like each other. We
separate them and provide each of the two dogs with compatible playmates
and a handler. We will be perfectly honest with the owners if this
happens and we will make suggestions for the future care of your
pooch.
Question: What is a normal day at the
farm like?
Answer: 6am Wake up time
6-7am Play & Potty Time
7-8am Feeding Time (when applicable)
8-10am Inside Play
10-12noon Outside Play & Potty Time
12noon-2 Inside Cool Down Time
2-4pm Outside Play & Potty Time
4-6pm Feeding Time (when applicable)
6-7:30pm Inside Play
7:30-8:30pm Outside Play & Potty
8:30-9:30 Rest, Cool Down
10pm Last Call for Potty
Note: No two dogs are alike. Some dogs love to
run much of the day, others
prefer to be inside and away from the elements. We cater to each
dog's individual needs, but use the above schedule as a guideline
for staffing purposes. We do strictly enforce the restriction of
heavy activity before or after mealtime to avoid the risk of bloat.
Question: Are the dogs always in the
company of people?
Answer: ABSOLUTLEY! We operate just like a standard daycare center
for children. The canine guests on the farm are always in the company
of a canine handler. As the number of guests on the farm increases,
so does the number of handlers. General rule of thumb: We provide
1 handler per 3 visiting dogs.
Question: What if my dog is sometimes
aggressive with other dogs?
Answer: Unfortunately, Martin's Dog Farm isn't going to be your
best option.
We only accept social canines who are friendly while in the company
of other canines.
Question: How do I enroll my dog for
care on Martin's Dog Farm?
Answer: The first step is to set up an initial meeting where a member
of our staff will evaluate your dog and ask several questions about
his/her history. We frequently have these initial meetings at your
home or at a nearby dog park.
Question: What if I'm not sure if my
dog will do well in the company of other dogs?
Answer: We recommend that you locate a dog park near your home and
slowly introduce your dog to other social dogs. It's best to start
out with a few dogs so as not to over-stimulate your dog during
his/her first experience. Be sure to tell the dog owners at the
dog park that you are new to the dog-park experience. Most dog owners
know if their dog will participate in a fight and will respond appropriately.
Question: My dog is not altered. Is
that a problem?
Answer: As a general rule, we only accept spayed & neutered
dogs. Only when special arrangements are made do we accept unaltered
dogs.
Question: How much advance warning
do you need to make a reservation?
Answer: We recommend that you provide us with as much notice as
possible. Because we provide specialized care, we do fill up quickly.
Question: Can we visit the farm?
Answer: Absolutely! We welcome visitors with an appointment. Prior
to your arrival, we will open the main farm gate and group dogs
appropriately for guests. Sometimes being greeted by up to 14 dogs
can be a little overwhelming for you and your pooch. All dogs visiting
the farm must be current on shots and social in the company of other
dogs. |
